Family and Employer Support

Family Support/Readiness

Family Support is a volunteer group of spouses, brothers, sisters, parents, and significant others that are supported by the National Guard Bureau in Washington, D.C. Each unit has a coordinator that can help the families (spouse, parents, significant others, children, etc.) of the soliders in the unit.

The objective is to make things as pleasant and trouble free as possible during drills, annual training and mobilization/deployment. Communication is encouraged and necessary to overcome hardships. You don't have to try to work things out alone. The Family Support Volunteers are happy to lend a helping hand and support.

Employer Support

Employer support is a two-way street. Federal law requires American employers to support civilian military employees and provide excused absences for military training, but at the same time, it requires that Guard members do their part to cooperate with employers.

Guard members should let their employers know about duty dates as far in advance as possible (even if they wouldn't normally be scheduled to work those days). They should also let their employer know about all the things they learned and accomplished during training, and use the new skills on the job. Soldiers should also be sure to thank their employers for their support.

The National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) conducts an awards program to recognize employers who practice personnel policies that support employee participation in the National Guard. Any member of the National Guard can nominate their employer for the "My Boss is a Patriot" award.
