Jump Team 1, Mosul, Northern Iraq - May 3 - July 2003

Jump Team 1 was located with the 2-44 ADA, 101st Airborne Division. They were responsible for medical care of those soldiers as well as the allied soldiers with whom they were training. The 2-44 ADA was providing security to the ammo supply point (ASP). This ASP was the 2nd largest in the world until May 22nd, 2003. A brush fire whipped through the ASP causing massive exlosions for 8 hours. All our soldiers evacuated without injury. The other mission of the ASP was to train the New Iraqi Security Force (NISF) and the Peshmurga (Kurdish special forces) to perform security for the ASP. Jump Team 1 provided first aid classes to the allied soldiers as part of this ADA mission.

A typical ammo warehouse at the ASP. The guard is sitting on SA-2 surface-to-air missiles. A warning sign. Jump Team 1's original home. A cheerful picture of Saddam. Starting an IV. Grandpa Dillon defends his patients from the flies. Repairing a lacerated hand. Close-up of sutures. Mosul ASP before... Mosul ASP during! Mosul ASP after... A generator that couldn't run away fast enough. Keith Lathrop with some shrapnel from the explosions. A large round that got impaled in our trailer by the explosions. Jump Team 1's second home. Inside the new clinic Working out with improvised weights. Reviewing patient decontamination procedures in case chemical weapons are found. Jump Team 1 with one of their ambulances and the Black Knight, their mascot Jump Team 1 instructors with the class of Peshmurga and NISF. Teaching the class. Working on splinting skills. More splints. Randal cornelius and Keith Lathrop demonstrate IV skills to Combat Lifesavers. Jump Team 1 was the first group of medics to recertify Combat Lifesavers for the 101st Airborne during operation Iraqi Freedom. The next evening after recertification a 101st soldier used the Heimlich maneuver to save a choking soldier!
