TWO MORE IOWA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD COMPANIES
ORDERED TO FEDERAL ACTIVE DUTY

The Department of Defense and the National Guard Bureau, Washington, D.C., announced Monday that the Iowa Army National Guard's Headquarters and Support Company, 109th Medical Battalion, Iowa City, and the 1133rd Transportation Company, Mason City, will be ordered to Federal Active Duty. These mobilizations are part of the United States Operation Enduring Freedom and the War on Terrorism.

A total of approximately 320 officers and soldiers are affected by this Federal Call-up. The 109th Medical Battalion is authorized about 150 medical professionals and healthcare support soldiers and the 1133rd Transportation Company is authorized about 170 soldiers. The soldiers are ordered to active duty for one year that may be extended for an additional year by the Secretary of the Army.

The Iowa National Guard will have over 900 airmen and soldiers on duty with this mobilization.

Both unit's soldiers will be placed in a Federal Active Duty Status at their respective armories on Friday, January 24, 2003, to complete necessary administrative processing and preparation of their equipment for shipping to the mobilization duty location. The units are scheduled to depart their armories on Monday, 27 January 2003, in route to Fort McCoy Wisconsin, their active duty Mobilization Station. It is unknown how long they will be at Fort McCoy before they are directed to their active duty location which has not been received at this headquarters.

The mission of the Headquarters and Support Compnay, 109th Medical Battalion is to provide command and control of subordinate medical companies that provide medical care in a theater of operations. They also distribute medical suppplies. The 1133rd Transportation Company is a long-haul medium truck company that transports personnel and supplies and equipment in a theater of operations.

The units will take all of their equipment when they depart their armories.

Both units were mobilized for active duty during 1990-91 and deployed to Saudi Arabia where they supported Operation Desert Storm.
